Milestones of Masjid India

A front view of Masid India

Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman is one of the tourist attraction and interesting place to walk trough that offers some casual attire, local products, clothing as well as sample some local delicacies. Last two weeks, I plan to go to Bazaar at Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman looking for tudung. After spending about an hour walking along at Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, I plan to stop at Masjid India (located apposite to Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman) for Zohor praying. This is my first time I went to Masjid India. I did took some pictures in the mosque while muslim was performing Zohor praying.

This mosque can hold about 2,000 worshippers, including those in the adjacent grounds

Another group was performing Zohor praying at the Masjid Jamek foyer

A history of masjid India. Masjid India was built in 1863 with a two storey religious building using aluminums rooftop. In 1963, the original wooden structure was demolished due to the overcrowding, especially during Friday Prayer. Masjid India was initially a small mosque. It was built with bricks and timber. The construction was financed by Indian Muslim merchants who lived and traded around Batu Road (now Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman). At that time there is no water supply so the Muslims that prayed in the mosque used water from the nearby Klang River for ablution.

The foundation was laid on 11th September 1962 by His Highness, the Sultan of Selangor. In 1962 a committee was formed to build a three storey mosque. The old building was pulled down in 1964. On 29th June 1964, the Sultan officially opened the new three storey mosque. On the 11th of September 1964, the foundation stone of the new Masjid India Selatan was laid by Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who was the former ruler of Selangor state at the time. On the 29th of June 1966, the present Masjid India Selatan was officially opened to public by the same Sultan.
